In 2002, Maben W. Poirier, a Canadian scholar, published A Classified and Partially Annotated Bibliography of all Forms of Publications, Sound Recordings, Internet Documents, etc., by and about the Anglo-Hungarian Philosopher of Science Michael Polanyi. Although he began considering a Polanyi bibliography project much earlier, Poirer began in 1996 compiling the material that was included in this 423- page book, published by Canadian Scholars’ Press Inc., and which has now been out of print for several years. There is a 2003 TAD 29 (2) interview of Poirier that provides more details about Poirier’s work and the structure of his comprehensive annotated bibliography.

Presenter

Colin Cordner, the TAD General Editor, who studied under Poirier as an undergraduate, worked with Poirier during and after graduate school updating and digitizing Poirer’s bibliography. In the summer of 2024, there was a brief preview of some of Cordner’s work on the Polanyi Society Discussion List. This Zoom session will be a presentation that provides an orientation to the digital bibliography including how to access and use it and contribute to its expansion. The bibliography will hopefully soon be accessible from the Polanyi Society website.

Zoom Link

The link for this session will be posted on the Polanyi Society Discussion List a few days before 19 Dec. 2024. Registration for the session is not required but if you want to receive, on 18 December 2024, an e-mail with the link included, please send a note to both Phil Mullins (mullins@missouriwestern.edu) and Gus Breytspraak (gus.breytspraak@ottawa.edu).

Zoom Session Videos

It is somewhat helpful to the coordinators of these Zoon sessions to have some advance notice about who and how many people are likely to participate (we share this information with presenters). As is always the case, the scheduled time for this session will be problematic for some. We will make every effort to post the video of the session as quickly as possible. We are considering, with some Zoom sessions, putting together a one-hour follow-up session after the video has been posted for a couple of weeks. Such post-video sessions will be simple open discussions (focused on a particular video) and the presenter may or may not be in the session. The 21 Nov. 2024 Beira Zoom session outlined ways how anyone interested can do electronic searches of the digital Michael Polanyi Papers. Some people are now experimenting with the opportunity that Eduardo Beira has set up on his Google Drive. Another Zoom session after the video has been posted a couple of weeks perhaps would provide an opportunity for conversation among those experimenting with the system.
