History of Polanyi SocietyPublications

Tradition and Discovery: The Polanyi SocietyJournal (TAD) is the successorto earlier newsletter format and mini-journal publications which the PolanyiSociety began publishing in the seventies; these early predecessors were issued underother names (see discussion below) and were published somewhat irregularly. From the mid-eighties (Vol XII, No. 1) through July, 2015 (Vol. XLI, No. 3) the publication was called Tradition and Discovery: The Polanyi Society Periodical and thereafter Tradition and Discovery: The Polanyi Society Journal. Below is a listingof early Polanyi Society publications. Issues beginning with TAD Vol. XVII, No.1 & 2, Spring, 1990-91 are available in a standardarized pdf formatin the digital archives. Early issues listed below are also available in the archives but as a single file. The index of TAD authors does identify some (but not all) materials published in the earlier newslettersand mini-journal issues. Only the table of contents is accessible via the links in the listing below. Questions about early publications of the Polanyi Society can be sent to Phil Mullins (mullins@missouriwestern.edu).

The first newsletter, called “Society ofExplorers,” was issued in theFall 1972 (Vol. 1, No. 1); two succeedingnewsletters with that name followed inWinter 1972-73 (Vol. I, No.2) and Spring 1973 (Vol. I, No.3).

In the Fall of 1973, the newsletter’s name waschanged to simply “The Polanyi Society.” Newsletter issues with this name follow butactual dates of publication are not always clear and (as the material in the issues shows)are often after the date listed for the issue.

By 1983, the newsletter format had become unwieldy( Vol. X, No. 2 Winter 1982-83 was 14 pages long) and “The PolanyiSociety” shifted to a mini-journal format in the Fall of 1983. Therewere only two mini-journal numbers with the name “The Polanyi Society”:Vol. XI, No. 1, Fall, 1983 and Vol. XI, No. 2, Winter, 1983-84.With Vol. XII, No. 1, Fall, 1984-85, the mini-journal name changedto “Tradition and Discovery: The Polanyi Society Periodical.” This name was used through the July, 2015 (Vol. XLI, No. 3) number; “Tradition and Discovery: The Polanyi Society Journal” has been the name used beginning with Vol XLII, No. 2.

Following is a list of early publications (before 1990-1991). As noted above, there were some lapses in publication and some changes in the way issues were dated. This listsimply uses the cover designation.

Vol. XII, No.1, Fall, 1984-85

Vol. XII, No.2, Winter, 1984-85

Vol. XIII, No.1, Fall, 1985-86

Vol. XIII, No.2, Spring, 1985-86

Vol. XIV, No.1, Fall, 1986-87

Vol. XIV, No.2, Spring, 1986-87

Vol. XV, No. 1,Winter, 1987-88

Vol. XV, No. 2,Spring, 1987-88

Vol. XVI, No.1, Winter, 1988-89

Vol. XVI, No.2, Spring, 1988-89

The material included in the early newslettersand mini-journal was quite diverse. Frequently there were announcementsabout upcoming meetings, reports on meetings and conferences, Polanyi Societymembership lists, bibliographic data, book reviews and short essays. Oftenthere was reprinted material from Convivium: The United Kingdom Reviewof Post-critical Thought (the publication of the United Kingdom counterpartto the Polanyi Society whose name was also Convivium). In 1994-95, the Conviviummembership was merged with the Polanyi Society. From the period of the shiftto mini-journal format (Vol. XI, No. 1, Fall, 1983), articles and reviewsbecame the major content of Tradition and Discovery.
